 Popularity of the thriller genre:  

The thriller genre is so appealing to its audience as it aims to get you hooked within the first episode or in the opening of the movie. The genre also seems to have a movie or series for everyone, due to the different topics within thriller, including crime, horror or detective fiction. Thrillers also bring together a combination of popular elements such as intense storylines, relatable characters and high-quality production. A good thriller will leave the audience questioning each moment and on the edge of their seats, each episode building suspense making the viewer want to finish the movie or series until the end to uncover the mystery. Thrillers are often also psychological, so will help engage the viewers in the plot allowing them to try uncover what is occurring. 

 An example of a popular TV thriller is Squid Game, which gained a lot of popularity globally in 2020. It is a dystopian thriller, so will have aspects of this to target fans of this genre. Squid Games became so popular due to its unique storyline, a concept that hadn’t really been replicated before. It also has well-developed characters with different backstories that each gave them varied reasons to join the games. It is also an emotional show, with levels of violence that keeps the audience engaged.  

A different version of a TV thriller is Black Doves, a spy thriller series which is the opposite of Squid Game. The show became so popular due to the high level of action and interesting storyline, following the secret spy life of the main character, played by Keira Knightley who is a popular actress. The show is also not predictable, so leaves the viewers guessing each moment. It may target young adult females due to the main character. 

Another TV thriller is Breaking Bad, a crime thriller that has captivated audiences globally. What makes Breaking Bad so popular is its intense storyline and well-crafted character development. The show also covers many social issues including morality, crime, drug use and raises questions about the consequences of our actions. It is well suited to the thriller genre as the show aims to keep the viewers on the edge of our seats due to the high tension throughout. The show targets a more mature audience, due to the topics discussed, so targets a young adult and adult male audience- as the main characters are males.

  TV Thriller Research   Shows I researched:    Black Doves, The Perfect Couple, Sherlock, Squid Game, Breaking Bad Black Doves (2024)   For Black Doves, the main target audience is woman due to the show having a female lead character. It may also target adult men, as a male character is shown in the poster in the background. The show includes two famous actors, possibly targeting fans of the actors to watch the show. The series involves violence, as pictured with the guns, so will be directed at young adults and adults. With the red, bold text it applies to the thriller genre as red is usually linked to danger and even blood- indicating the show involves some of this. It has a bleak colour scheme with black and red being used, and the use of the characters serious facial expressions leaves the viewers questioning who they are and what their intent is. They are not pointing the guns at each other, but to the sides which may indicate they are on the same team....

TV Thriller Planning - Final Idea

  Planning for TV Thriller   For my TV thriller, it is a mystery crime concept. A small coastal town s community i s left on edge after 5 disappearances take place . T he two main characters return to their hometown after years away, after both studying to become journalists, only to find out that their childhood friends are among  the missing people. After trying to uncover the reason behind the disappearances, sh e begins to delve deeper into the town’s dark past and a series of secrets that are connected to the disappearances. Each episode brings them closer to the hidden past of the town and finally uncovering the truth of the disappearances.   The main target audience is 16–25-year-olds, and mine wi ll specifically try to target women. My adverts will appeal to the target audience by including two women within this age bracket .
